Brownies in the past

We have been learning a little about the history of Brownies, starting with the activities Brownies took part in 50-100 years ago.

Brownies had to show they were fit, so our girls spent time hopping ans skipping in a figure of eight

Brownies had to be aware of their surroundings and country. Our girls worked out how to put together the Union Flag from its constituant parts, while trying to name as many flowers, trees and birds as they could. It turns our they knew lots of them, but need a bit of practice with the flag.

Brownies are helpful and our girls practiced making 'Brownie Gold'. In a time where the household was filled with more metal than plastic, being able to clean metal was considered a life skill. Brownies polished their weekly subs as practice .

Brownies had their special way of welcoming guests: the grand howl. Crouching in a circle, with their right hand in the Brownie Salute, they would raise and lower three times softly calling twit-twoo getting louder with each raise, finishing with a leap in the air clapping above their heads and cheering. We demonstrated this for the parents at collection time.

Brownies played lots of games, we tried a couple out and had great fun running around, playing Brownies and Broomsticks.
